MPLAB ICD 2 USB Device Driver
First Time Installation

For Windows 2000 and XP

To use MPLAB ICD 2 with USB communications, the following steps MUST be taken in order to properly install the device drivers. 

Before You Begin Determine your method of communication between the ICD and the PC. A. Serial  port communcation - No driver installation is needed. Plug in the serial cable and set up communications in MPLAB IDE. B. USB communication - Follow the instructions listed here. If you have already preinstalled the drivers during MPLAB IDE installation, read "USB Preliminaries" and then jump to Step 4. Otherwise follow all instructions. Note: Do not plug in both serial and USB cables. Choose one method of communication and use that cable only.
USB Preliminaries MPLAB ICD 2 should NOT be plugged into a USB port, powered, or plugged into a target board at this time. If you have already plugged MPLAB ICD 2 into the USB port and the "Found New Hardware Wizard" has popped up, click Cancel on that dialog, unplug the MPLAB ICD 2 and continue with these instructions. If you have already plugged MPLAB ICD 2 into the USB port and used the  "Found New Hardware Wizard" to install drivers automatically, you have installed the wrong drivers. Follow the instructions specified in C:\Program Files\Microchip\MPLAB IDE\ICD2\Drivers\clnicd2.htm.
Software Preliminaries During the install, a dialog may pop up twice stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be:  Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Loader Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Client If this happens, click "Continue Anyway" each time. Click the Close button on the preinstaller/updater utility when done.
STEP 1 Connect  MPLAB ICD 2 to the PC with a USB cable. If you are planning on using both USB and an external power supply, use only USB when installing the drivers, i.e., DO NOT plug an external power supply into the pod for driver installation. If you are using an external USB HUB, make sure it has a power supply and is powered or MPLAB ICD 2 will not work.
STEP 2 - Windows XP SP2 If you have service pack 2, the first time a new USB device is plugged into a Windows XP system, this dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device and asking you whether or not to search for update software. Select "No, not this time".  Click "Next" and continue with the steps below.
STEP 3 The first time a new USB device is plugged in, a small dialog box will appear indicating that the system has found a new hardware device. There also may be a dialog box that informs the user that a device data base is being built or updated. After these dialogs appear, the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box  is displayed. Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click "Next" to continue the installation. Note: If you are running Windows 2000, you may not see this dialog or the next 3 dialogs. Instead, the system will automatically install the software without asking you. This is OK. Proceed to Step 7.
STEP 4 During the install, a dialog will pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Loader". Click "Continue Anyway". (See Software Preliminaries for a picture of this dialog.) The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear once the Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Loader has been installed. Click "Finish" to end this installation and begin the install of the Firmware Client.
STEP 5 A small dialog box will appear indicating that the system completed adding a hardware device, immediately followed by the statement that it has found a new hardware device. After this dialog appears, the Found New Hardware Wizard dialog box  is displayed again, this time to install the Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Client. Select "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click "Next" to continue the installation.
STEP 6 During the install, a dialog will pop up stating, "The software you are installing for this hardware: Microchip Development Tool has not passed Windows Logo testing..." In this case, Microchip Development Tool will be "Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Client". Click "Continue Anyway". (See STEP 3 for a picture of this dialog.) The "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" will appear once the Microchip MPLAB ICD 2 Firmware Client has been installed. Click "Finish" to end the USB installation.
STEP 7 Verify that the driver installed by viewing the Device Manager*, Microchip Tools section. Complete the installation by referring to the "Using MPLAB ICD 2" (DS51265), "MPLAB ICD 2 In-Circuit Debugger User's Guide" (DS51331) or MPLAB ICD 2 on-line help file. *To open the Device Manager window, click Start>Settings>Control Panel. In Contorl Panel, double click System. In System Properties, Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
